There are 40000 types of rice

Syeda Luthfun Nahar : ‘For last couple of days, I am regularly writing about rice. All of us know, rice is the staple food of many countries. Among cultivated food, after sugarcane and maze, rice takes the third place. Though the first two serve as commercial use beside food, rice only serve as food. There are 40000 types of rice. In a very simple way, we can say there are brown rice, white rice, black rice, wild rice etc. Every country has there own style and history to cook and eat rice.

To the people of Asia, rice is not only serve as food. It’s equal to their life. Though in modern lifestyle, lots of thing changed still their regular lifestyle, religion and cultural activities rice plays a great role. The elder people of our family always say that if we waste a single grain of rice, after life each rice will becomes seven snakes and they will bit us.

A popular saying goes on, don’t leave home without having food. It will bring evil. Hindus practice a festival “Mukhe vaat” to give first solid food to an infants. To them it’s a religious norm. Also in Hindu weeding, at the time when bride is ready to start her new journey of her life, leaving her parents home, she takes a handful rice and leaves that her parents place as a gratitude to her parents to brought up.

Closing today’s write up with a norm we practice in our family. Though we are very open minded and cultured family, we still follow some practice which we learn from our elders and still carry on that without any question. Our view is may be there is something good thay’s why our ancestors practice those. Like whenever we shift home or purchase a new home to live, first things we will bring in that place is the holy Quran and a jar full of rice. The explanation is as a muslim we bring the holy book to protect us from any evil. Add on the rice is a symbolic gesture that the family will never face any scarcity in food.
